![]() ![]() ![]() Watching them live was an amazing experience! The atmosphere they created in the small cozy venue made it feel like they were my friends playing up there, as if once they were done we could all sit and have a conversation. The record picked them up two Grammy Award nominations, and was reissued as a deluxe edition last year the band have since turned their attentions to the making of their follow-up.įirst off, The Lumineers are one of my all time favourite bands. It was replete with songs, like “Ho Hey”, that feel pretty much written for the communal singalong, and accordingly they went down a storm at festivals like Reading and Leeds in the UK. It was that track that helped them to find a record deal, and it featured on their album when it was finally released in 2012. They found the competitive environment intimidating and the cost of living prohibitive, though, so they instead decamped to Denver, Colorado, where they’d write their biggest hit to date, signature track “Ho Hey”. It’d taken seven years from when core members Wesley Keith Schultz (lead vocals, guitar and piano) and Jeremiah Caleb Fraites (drums) first started playing together for them to actually get an album out there in the first place they met and began making music together in Ramsey, New York, but quickly moved to Brooklyn, New York to pursue their dream of a career in music. So, obviously, this is a love note in form of a song so he could say it the way he felt it.Not to talk down the rest of The Lumineers’ first, and so far only, album, but it kind of stands as a shining example of how much of a difference one huge anthem can make for a band. The bleeding means life, and seeing his family will bring him back to life, but his life is feeling like it’s fading and he doesn’t want to lose everything he’s been trying to do right while waiting on her. If she would have went to where he was he’d be standing by someone else that wasn’t her, and how would she have felt or what would she have thought? Would that be right? And he’s talking about what it would have been … past tense, was there someone else back then and now he wants her back and she’s moving on and he doesn’t think she’s right for any other guy but him? A song is a romantic way to tell someone you miss them, or maybe the song is to make himself feel better. ![]() He’s not able to tell her these things or they’re not communicating this or she’s not seeing what all he’s doing. Or maybe he thought doing all the right things would bring her back somehow. He doesn’t know what he did and when that started the chain of events in action? He doesn’t know why she left him? He doesn’t know how he got so lonely and lost even without her since he’s been trying to do all the right things. He’s not happy…there is something missing causing him to feel lonliness even though he’s trying to do right, which should bring happiness. Although he does say, “it”, which might means he’s trying to do what he’s going through right.Įven though he’s trying to do the right things, his life is lonely. Wesley Schultz is trying to do the right things the right way, whether it’s in a relationship or in life in general. Ho! Hey! Ho! Hey! Ho! I been tryin' to do it right (Hey!)
